Welcome to the Health Professionals Simulation Centre Sim Man

The Health Professionals Simulation Centre is a collaborative venture developed by UBC School of Nursing, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the Centre of Excellence for Surgical Education and Innovation (CESEI). It is designed to support publicly funded providers of healthcare professional education.

This initiative has as its primary goal the creation of a searchable, Web-based collection of multidisciplinary educational simulation resources for educators across the province and beyond.

The site is focused on the any type of simulation based learning activity for health -professional education:

  1. Clinical simulation activities designed for classroom use, such as paper-based exercises
  2. Online - Web based simulations specifically developed to run in Web Browsers (E.g. Flash based interactive simulations)
  3. Other computer-based simulations developed to run as stand alone or networked applications
  4. Simulations designed for use with physical medium fidelity simulation workbenches and human patient simulators. E.g. suturing simulators, IV simulators etc.
  5. Simulations designed for use with standardized patients, physical high fidelity human patient simulators and simulation workstations E.g. The METI Human Patient Simulator, the Laerdal SimMan, or endoscopy Simulator (after CPSI definitions 2003).

Guidelines for the design and content of simulations are available on the site, mechanisms to upload and download content, and a peer review mechanism for the resources available. It remains the responsibility of developers and users of content in individual institutions to ensure that it meets their own standards. The Health Professionals Simulation Centre is an ongoing research prototype. As a result it may be offline occasionally for updates and upgrades to the system as the project develops and new ideas surrounding educational simulations are tested and implemented. Thank you for your patience.

Please join us, membership is free, but you must register to access the repository and forums. Please do submit your resources for sharing, as the more users this collaborative site has, the more useful it will become to the community of simulation users.

This project is supported by funding from the BC Academic Health Council.
